Meaningful Membership

Meaningful Membership at Hope Bible Church Kelowna

Church membership is a tangible way to live out your faith in committed community. At Hope Bible Church Kelowna, Meaningful Membership reflects a biblical commitment to belonging, accountability, discipleship, and shared mission for the glory of God.

Biblical Basis for Church Membership

Church membership is not explicitly stated in Scripture, but the principles behind it are deeply embedded in biblical teachings. The Bible portrays the church as a community of believers, often referred to as a flock, body, household, or kingdom (1 Peter 5:1-3, 1 Corinthians 12:27, Galatians 6:10). Membership reflects a commitment to belonging, accountability, and mutual support within this body of Christ.

Some key scriptures include:

  • 1 Peter 5:1-3: Peter exhorts church leaders to shepherd the “flock” among them. This implies a defined group of believers who are cared for and led by elders, pointing to the need for identifying who is part of the church.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:12-27: Paul speaks of the church as a body, where each member plays an essential role, symbolizing how members are connected and vital to the functioning of the whole.
  • Hebrews 13:17: The command to “obey your leaders and submit to them” implies that leaders need to know who their flock is, and members need to commit to being part of that flock.

These passages emphasize community, accountability, and leadership within the local church, all of which align with the idea of church membership.

Purpose and Benefits of Church Membership

Identifying the flock

It helps leaders and the congregation know who is committed to the local church (1 Peter 5:2).

Accountability

Membership provides a structure for spiritual growth and accountability (i.e. Discipleship), helping believers remain connected and committed to each other and the church’s mission (Hebrews 13:17, Galatians 6:1-2).

Participation in the Body of Christ

Members contribute their unique gifts to the community, allowing the church to function effectively and fulfill its calling (1 Corinthians 12:27, Ephesians 4:11-16).

Discipline

Because of our sinful nature, at times it may be necessary to exercise church discipline for the sake of the church and for the sake the individual who is in sin. (Matthew 18: 15-18 1 Corinthians 5).
